The Detroit Stage Employees Union, IATSE Local 38, is proud to announce the 2024 "Jazz Goes to College" Scholarship Awards!

This program is funded by your generous donations to the 9th Annual IATSE Local 38 Golf Outing.

"JAZZ GOES TO COLLEGE" SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDED AT THE DETROIT JAZZ FESTIVAL: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2024

Since 2019 The Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation and the Detroit Stage Employees Union, IATSE Local 38, have teamed up to reward Michigan college students studying Theatre and Music Technology programs.


So far, 14 Michigan undergrads have received scholarships totaling more than $38.000, and many have developed successful careers in Michigan's entertainment industry.


Their studies encompass the backstage and behind-the-scenes crafts that support performances and live events of all kinds. These stagecraft technicians, from carpenters to electricians, from lighting designers to script supervisors are al key to any successful live performance.

GOLF OUTING DETAILS:

• Continental breakfast & check-in begins 7AM.
• The outing is  a 4-person scramble format, with a shotgun start at 8AM. 
• Hot dogs & chips are offered at the “turn.” 
• After golf, a barbecue lunch of chicken, pulled pork, and side dishes will be served. Cash bar service available.
• Afternoon at the clubhouse: music, prizes for winning team, closest-to-hole, longest drive, and others.

Entry fee: $100.00/player, includes 18 holes with cart

$50/non-golfer BBQ lunch and afternoon activities.

THE "JAZZ GOES TO COLLEGE" SCHOLARSHIPS:

Each scholarship recipient receives:

  • $2500 cash award for the 2023-24 school year.
  • Recognition on stage at the 2023 Detroit Jazz Festival, with IATSE Local 38 presenting the award.
  • The Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation will provide the plaques for scholarship winners (presented on stage by IATSE Local 38).
  • As funding permits, additional Scholarships may be awarded.

ELIGIBILITY:

This scholarship is for students currently enrolled in Music- and Theatre-tech programs, as an incoming (matriculating) college sophomore, junior,or senior. Program must be in the state of Michigan. Application and associated documents must be received by pm on Friday, August 9, 2024Scholarship recipient(s) will be chosen by August 16, 2024.

Students must upload two statements:

Student: Tell us why you are interested in pursuing a career in Music or Theatre technology or production.

Faculty: Tell us a little about this student and why you feel they would be successful in their chosen career.

Applicants must be available to attend this year's Detroit Jazz Festival Labor Day weekend award recognition ceremony, scheduled for Sunday September 1, 2024, on the Amphitheater Stage, Hart Plaza, Detroit, MI.

IATSE TTF Online Safety Training

The IATSE Training Trust Fund is excited to offer free online safety training for all workers covered under an IATSE Agreement. The free training consists of the General Safety Training “A” & Environmental Safety “A2” courses. The TTF is encouraging all eligible workers to take these courses.
